Pondview Veterinary Clinic, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a mostly small animal practice in Northwest, Ohio. We see roughly 5-8% large animal (equine, bovine, caprine, ovine and porcine) and some exotic pets. We are a very fast-paced, busy practice in a rural area whose main focus is taking care of our people and their pets. Our practice performs a fair amount of canine reporductive work including artificial and surgical inseminations as well as cesarean sections. An extern with us would get a great view of veterinary medicine. They could perform spays and neuters and observe c- sections, cystotomies, exploratories, dental prophys and many other surgeries. We also have many equipment a tools to help us with medical cases as well. We would analyze bloodwork, read fecals, interpret radiographs and ultrasounds. Our staff enjoys teaching and coaching and we would love to have a veterinary student join our team to better their knowledge of the veterinary profession.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We staff approximately 20 people, including 3 fulltime veterinarians, 7 veterinary technicians (4 registered) and  3 veterinary assistants as well as kennel workers and client care representative. Our staff is always willing to teach a student wanting to learn something new. We have new blood machines, digital radiogrpahs, anultrasound, a therapy and a CO2 laser, electrocautery, anesthetic monitors and computer charting.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We are open to shadowing but find more students enjoy actually supporting while in our clinic. We find they get more out of their visit if they are thrown into the work we have that day. We protect students from potential aggressive patients. Most of our staff work 4 - 9 hour days with a day off during the week. We all take our turn with the 4 hour weekend shift on Satruday as well. The student would not be expected to be at the clinic anymore than our staff is but would likely mirror a schedule of our owner.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We do not have an apartment or permanent housing but we are willing to house a student with a staff member. If the student would prefer a hotel, we will help find student housing and will help with some of the costs.
