Veterinary students will be able to experience shelter medicine practice. This includes performing spay/neuter surgeries, performing intake exams on new arrivals to the shelter, reviewing preventative medicine protocols, riding along with the animal control officer, and providing medical and surgical care to our shelter/zoo residents. I directly supervise the students and we will round on cases and protocols daily.
I, Laney Baris, am the head veterinarian in the shelter. Dr. Marion is another staff veterinarian at a branch shelter location. We employ several veterinary technicians and a receptionist. We have x-Ray capabilities. We also have a therapeutic laser. We have pulse oximetry and a blood pressure monitor. We have two isoflurane anesthesia machines. Our facility has one surgery suite and one exam room.
Students are expected to spend Tuesday through Saturday in the clinic. Our hours are 9 am - 6 pm Tuesday through Friday and 9 am - 6 pm. I allow the students to be totally hands on. They can perform surgeries, dentals, examinations, and proceedures.
