Description of Elective Experience: 

Extern will get to experience what a typical caseload is like in small animal medicine. Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub in to surgery, assist in the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, develop your client communication skills, your technical skills, and produce appropriate medical records.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Student has access to any staff for questions along with textbooks and other websites, such as VIN, plumbs, etc. for any needs. Student may, of course, also ask any of the doctors that are present. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Extern students are expected to be enthusiastic and effective participants in our patient care activities, upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice. Student will be expected to be present 40 hours a week, and days are subject to be determined based on the doctors schedule. Student will be shadowing but also will be allowed to perform certain tasks based on level of comfort of the student and to be determined at the discretion of the mentor doctor. Student must be enrolled in an accredited DVM program, authorized to work in US, and must carry professional liability insurance. AVMA PLIT liability insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA.
