Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center, GA

Description of Elective Experience: 

 Microscopic diagnosis of diseases of poultry and game birds via microscopic examination of tissues on glass slides. Students will review teaching materials consisting of glass slides from common poultry diseases along with reference materials. Participation in necropsies or sample collections is available. A mini poster is required.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

A microscope and reference books will be provided.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

1. Recognize microscopic lesions that are pathognomonic for certain diseases.
2. Recognize normal tissues microscopically.
3. Be able to develop a list of rule outs for lesions observed.
4. Be able to identify viral inclusions, fungal hyphae, protozoa, and bacteria microscopically.
5. Be able to identify special histochemical stains needed to identify certain changes or etiological agents.
