Premier Veterinary Group - Chicago, IL

Description of Elective Experience:

Emergency and critical care externship

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our hospital is a 10,000 square foot, open concept facility with two surgical suites equipped for minimally invasive procedures. We have full scoping capabilities, digital radiology, ultrasound, CT scan and a 1.5 Telsa MRI, as well as an in-house blood-banking program, high-flow oxygen therapy, and digital cytology capabilities. Current specialties include surgery, internal medicine, critical care, neurology, anesthesiology, and emergency/critical care. In addition to our two criticalists, our ER team includes 8 DVMs.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Most externs elect to work 8am-6pm Monday-Friday, but all are welcome to work after hours. Students primarily shadow ER doctors and criticalists (we try to provide a balance of exposure to managing more complex inpatient cases and receiving outpatient cases) but are expected to SOAP inpatients, and are encouraged to generate/discuss their own differentials, diagnostic recommendations, and treatment plans. Students are encouraged to assist with and/or perform procedures with DVM guidance/assistance (depending on individual skill level) and are able to scrub in on surgeries (surgery and neurology externs scrub in on all surgeries; students on ER/ECC are frequently able to follow their cases into the OR as well, pending individual interest). Externs are also expected to attend morning case rounds with our entire specialty team.
