Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine/Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab, IN

Description of Elective Experience: 

-Student will be involved in incoming pathology cases here at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic lab working with senior pathologists and the poultry medicine resident. This includes necropsy, ancillary diagnostics, and histopathology.

-Field visits to both commercial and backyard producers to assess flock health, management, and biosecurity.

-Work on extension articles for publication and be listed as an author.

-Gain experience in the different lab sections at the animal disease diagnostic lab to become more familiar with clinical bacteriology, serology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, and histopathology

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab is a meber of the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and the FDA Food Emergency Response Network (FERN). The lab is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), and serves as the official diagnostic laboratory for the State of Indiana.

All sections of the lab are fully staffed, and the student would have full access to all sections of the lab to learn more about the operations of a veterinary diagnostic lab in order to gain a better appreciation of how submitted samples are processed and run.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

-Responsible for working up all incoming poultry cases to the diagnostic lab with the poultry resident and senior clinicians, allowing for appropriate biosecurity as necessary when field visits are scheduled.

-Completing a client education handout/extension publication on a topic of interest.

-Participate in field visits to both commercial poultry and backyard premises.

-Hours will be from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, with field visit days likely being longer days.

-Rotate through the lab sections at the ADDL working directly with staff.
