River Trails Animal Hospital, IL

Description of Elective Experience: 

River Trails Animal Hospital is an AAHA accredited small animal (dog and cat) general practice servicing Deerfield, IL and the surrounding areas. Our doctors are proficient in a wide variety of medical and surgical procedures, including (but not limited to): spays/neuters, mass removals, gastrotomies/enterotomies, resection and anastamosis, cystotomies, dental extractions, and abdominal ultrasounds.

An extern will be involved directly with clinicians and take part in all aspects of workup and treatment (medical and surgical).

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have digital radiographs, digital dental radiographs, ultrasound, in-house diagnostics (CBC, chemistry, urinalysis), anesthetic monitoring (ECG, ETCO2, BP, SpO2).  Our staff to doctor ratio is high, which allows our doctors to focus on diagnosing and treating our patients. We utilize Cornerstone as our practice management and record-keeping software (paperless).

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student will work directly with a veterinarian throughout the week (40 hours). They will be responsible for working through cases with the clinician to determine the best course of action for each patient. Regular case reviews will be held throughout the week to help reinforce the student's overall understanding. Student will also assist with surgical procedures (based on their comfort level).
