Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital, CT

Description of Elective Experience:

Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital is a mixed practice, though this externship focuses on large animal ambulatory medicine. The large animal team provides medicine and surgical services for horses, dairy and beef cattle, small ruminants, camelids, pigs and the occasional exotic large animal (camels, water buffalo etc). Haul-in appointments are available for large animal patients, and limited overnight care is provided when indicated for a particular case. Specialty offerings include reproductive care for all species, specialized surgical services (goat tube cystotomies, for example) and equine sports medicine.

The small animal team provides medicine and outpatient surgical services for feline, canine and exotic animal patients (pocket pets and herptiles). The practice also offers rehabilitation/physical therapy and grooming.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Our days begin at 8am at the clinic and the length of a day varies, though we try very hard to be back at the clinic by 6pm. Calls may range from bovine wellness to equine lameness to emergency small ruminant medicine and anything in between. We welcome students for as many hours and as many days as they are able to spend with us. Our practice is open 6 days a week, with 24/7 large animal on-call coverage. We do not expect students to accompany us on all of those calls, and if a day looks like a late one, students are welcome to follow in their own vehicles to ensure that they can leave when they have to.
