Description of Elective Experience: 

Basic animal husbandry, observation/assistance in medical procedures as appropriate, preparation of medication (filling prescriptions) as well as dilutions, basic restraint techniques, enclosure maintenance and care, medical record keeping, hospitalized patient care. Participation in necropsies as applicable. Students are to summarize journal articles and craft presentations for staff at end of their externship.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Experienced Veterinary staff, amongst them are ACZM, ABVP reptile, and ABVP avian boarded members and others studying for board examinations. San Antonio Zoo also staffs several Veterinary Technicians and Hospital Keepers. Externs will be provided opportunity to both observe and get hands-on experience with monitoring and injections if applicable. Students will be able to use teaching microscopes. Equipment includes standard tools for veterinary practice and for care of various sized zoo animals. Relevant books a well as computer access are provided to students.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Externs are expected to arrive from 7am-4pm Monday-Friday with occasional optional opportunities after hours/weekends that are encouraged. A mix of shadowing and support opportunities are provided.
