Save Elephant Foundation/Elephant Nature Park, Thailand

Description of Elective Experience: 

Elephant Nature Park is an elephant sanctuary located in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand which rescues any animal in need of care. We are currently home to 112 asian elephants, 700 dogs, 1600+ cats, buffaloes, horses, cows and hundred more other animals. Experience will be offered with a whole range of animals but focused mainly on working with elephants to gain clinical experience with elephants in a sanctuary setting where the elephants are rescued often with significant injuries from abuse and overwork. The candidate will be able to gain experience from vets with years of clinic experience working with elephants in the range countries. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The student will work with our clinical team including veterinarians, vet techs, auxiliary staff and animal caretakers. The student will be able to learn from our clinical team with years of experience of working with elephants and other animals in the range countries.

We operate an elephant clinic within the sanctuary which enables us to carry out treatment procedures and also exploratory examinations using X-ray, ultrasound, laser.

We also operate an emergency animal ambulance which is staffed by our team to respond to any animal in need outside of our sanctuary.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student will shadow our clinic team 6 days in the week, starting at 8am until 5pm daily. The student will also have the opportunity to observe any emergency cases that come in after hours but this will be the decision of the student. Our clinic team will assess the competence of the student in order to decide the tasks she will be able to perform with supervision and tasks that she can shadow. 

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

We will host the student for free in our on-site accommodation, she will receive 3 vegan meals per day.
