Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio (SOS of Ohio) is a non-profit organization that provides high volume (HVHQSN) spay and neuter services to lower income public and animal rescue groups, shelter medicine services to animal shelters and rescue groups, and wellness services to animal welfare groups and people on government assistance. During their rotation, fourth year students will learn about population medicine through medical shifts at the Franklin County Dog Shelter, as well as high volume surgical techniques. They will receive hands on experience doing surgeries for the dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter, as well as dogs and cats (including participation in the TNR program) at the SOS of Ohio Spay and Neuter Clinic.
Students will help the veterinarians provide morning intake exams on patients recieving surgery that day. Under direct supervision, they will be trained on high volume surgical techniques, and will perform spays and neuters on dogs, cats, and rabbits during their rotation. They will assist with various special procedures like enuclations, cherry eye repairs, mass removals, hernia repairs, and dental extractions on a case by case basis. Students interested in shelter medicine will assist veterinarians with medical exams on the dogs at the FCDS and help with on-call/overnight emergnecies if they are interested.
