South Anderson Veterinary Clinic, IN

Description of Elective Experience:

At South Anderson Veterinary Clinic we are a full service, Christian owned companion animal hospital with a sister clinic, Country Critters Veterinary Hospital, in Daleville, IN.  We are offering an externship opportunity for fourth year veterinary students with an interest in small animal medicine.  At SAVC you will see a wide variety of cases in a general practice setting with a small amount of exotics as well. We strive to uphold a great work-life balance while still offering a high standard of care for our patients.  While staying and learning at SAVC we will immerse you in the world of small animal GP services as well as demonstrate the mentorship you would expect if you were to join our team after graduation.  Housing is offered for the duration of your externship at SAVC.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are a two facility, three doctor practice. We have 10-12 veterinary technicians/veterinary assistants as well as 3-5 receptionists. We are equipped with digital x-ray, surgical suite with anesthesia monitoring as well as dental radiography and a wet table. We have staff trained and certified in canine rehabilitation and have a companion animal cold laser at both locations. We have a tonopen at one practice and a tonovet at our second location. We have centrifuge and staining equipment for in house cytology and lab work. We are also equipped with a Vetscan in house chemistry unit but will send out additional bloodwork, urine, and fecal samples to Antech labs. Our software is through Infinity Impromed on all of our computers. Our second location is fully digital with no paper charts. There is a staff library available for staff and students for additional information and education. We also have a boarding facility.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to be present and dressed professionally during our working hours. We will expect the students to shadow and assist based on their knowledge, comfort, at our doctors discretion. We encourage questions to be asked although do request these questions are held until we are not with the clients. Students will likely be expected to be able to assist in restraint and other technical skills at the discretion of the doctor on staff that day. Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8am-6pm and Saturday from 8am-1pm. Our staff generally arrive between 7-7:30am and the end of day time is dependent on the case load and work load that day. The end of day time can range from 6pm-8pm or later depending on any emergency surgery cases that presented during our office hours. Our office does not see after hours emergencies but will see same day urgent care/ER cases for our established clients. Students will be expected to be present until all daily cases are settled for that day.
