Description of Elective Experience: 

Externs will shadow interns and assist staff veterinarians with in-hospital cases, surgeries, imaging, haul in outpatients, and ambulatory farm calls.  Assistance with lameness exams, imaging, laboratory, and treatments based on experience and abilities. Minimum of 2 weeks with maximum of 6 weeks will provide opportunity for learning and hands on, where applicable.  

Some long days in the show and racing season, and assistance on call or with overnight treatments will be expected and scheduled.  Weekly rounds attendance is required and involvement with case management is encouraged.

  • archived images (MRI, digital radiographs, ultrasound)
  • 3 CVTs, Vet assts, 2 interns, 5 office staff
  • Video gastroscopy and airway endoscopy; digital radiography and ultrasonography; sMRI; in house laboratory; surgical suite; shockwave; PRP; IRAP; 4 lameness surfaces
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 
  • prompt & professional at all times
  • horse handling
  • technical & surgical assistance
  • rounds participation
  • 7:30 am - 6:00 pm M-F  and 7:30 am - 12:30 pm Saturday
  • night on call or assistance with hospital treatments with interns
  • Farm calls and/or hospital appointments with staff veterinarians

On site housing (at no cost) must be arranged in advance.  No pets please.
