Description of Elective Experience: 

100% Equine Referral and Ambulatory practice with Board Certified Internal Medicine and Surgery Specialists. Students will be assisting
doctors with emergency ambulatory and referral patients, as well as elective lameness, internal medicine, acupuncture, reproductive and preventive care cases. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of breeds and disciplines.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Practice is fully equipped for elective and emergency surgery as well as internal medicine / critical care patients.

Diagnostic equipment includes in-house laboratory (CBC/Chemistry/cytology/fecal/SAA), video endoscopy (gastric, bladder, airway), wireless digital radiology with portable and stationary generators (musculoskeletal, abdominal, thoracic, myelogram), portable ultrasound equipment (reproductive, musculoskeletal, abdominal, cardiac), and advanced dental equipment (air/water abrasion for filling diastemas, Powerfloat, VersaFloat).

Board Certified Equine Dental Specialist and Veterinary Ophthalologists see patients at the hospital on a case-by-case basis.
 

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Assist doctors with physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations and formulating therapeutic plans for all patients seen. Assist surgeons in surgery or assist with anesthesia. Assist in monitoring and treating critical cases both during the day and overnight. Students are expected to assist the emergency veterinarians with patients both in the hospital and on the farm. Students are strongly encouraged to focus on anatomy and physiology in order to more accurately interpret results of diagnostic procedures and formulate therapeutic plans. Students will be expected to present cases in morning rounds. The amount of hands-on clinical experience (IV catheterization, nasogastric intubation, rectal examination, dentistry, etc) is determined on a case-by-case and student-by-student basis.

Students are expected to be available during business hours, as well as afterhours emergencies / intensive care patients.  

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Housing onsite- includes small apartment with two twin beds, desk and dresser.  Full bathroom, refrigerator and microwave. Wireless internet. No charge for housing; however, students are responsible for food and transportation.  If students arrive at hospital by shuttle / taxi, interns will assist with transport to/from grocery store. No pets.
