Description of Elective Experience: 

The student will be expected to enter the exam rooms before the mentoring Doc and get a history and examine the patient.  She will report those findings to the Doc.  She will then be expected to come up with a treatment  plan and execute it along with the Doc.  She will be expected to do examine all surgery and dental patients and calculate drug doses for pain mgmt and anesthesia and discuss with the Doc.  She will assist with those procedures.  We have a great relationship with a no kill shelter locally and we perform many spays and nueters for them.  We can usually get some patients for the student to perform some spays and neuters.  Any hopitalized patient will need to be assesed by the student (along with the Doc) and discuss the treatment and discuss the patients progress.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have hosted many students over the years so we are experienced at helping them learn and develop.  We have experienced techs to help our Docs and student.  As far as equipment goes we have a surgery laser, theraputic class iv laser, ultrasound, Digital radiography, digital dental rad, idexx in house lab equipment, tonopen, fluid pumps, anes monitoring equip, BP.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student will be expected to work 40 hours per week.  We have evening hours untl 7:30 but we do not take over night emergencies.  The student will be under the supervision of a Doc at all times.  She is expected to be on time, dress professionally, and be prepared to work hard, be perpared to discuss treatment plans, and work to diagnose cases.  She should also be prepared to perform spays and neuters.
