Stateline Veterinary Service is based out of Darien, WI among a hub of dairy producers and livestock clients on the Wisconsin/Illinois border. We provide complete and unlimited veterinary service to dairy, beef, sheep, goats, and swine. Breakdown of species consists of approximately 75% dairy, 15% beef, 5% small ruminant, 5% show swine. Our herds range from 3,000 cows to 30 head with a variety of management styles and housing systems.

Veterinarians on staff have special interests and devote time to embryo transfer, OPU/IVF, calf health, calf lung ultrasound, small ruminant laparoscopic AI in addition to production herd health medicine. Most mornings consist of routine herd work, including ultrasounding for pregnancy.  Afternoons are filled with consulting, chute jobs, sick calls, and other scheduled procedures.

Our SVS owned dairy farm provides many opportunities for hands-on learning regarding all facets of dairy production. The farm serves to calve out recipient heifers carrying genomic embryos and provides a number of calving and calf processing opportunities at high level biosecurity. Our calf raising facility can provide experience in intensive calf raising and benchmarking.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

All doctors are equipped with a truck + vet box, surgical equipment, and mobile ultrasound. Clinic is staffed with receptionist, technicians, and houses blood chemistry machine, microscope, access to mobile digital X-ray and a portable chute. An exam room is at clinic for haul-in use. Otherwise, majority of procedures are done on-farm.

Three haul-in bovine donor collection facilities with donor housing are also a part of our practice. These facilities are equipped with IVF/OPU equipment and handling facilities including silencer chutes.

An additional mixed animal practice that services equine, and small animal is also within our practice ownership if it were so desired to have a mixed experience. However, most time will be devoted to Food Animal Medicine as the rotation is described.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to come ready for work, with a great team player mindset, an open mind, and a desire to learn. Questions and discussions are encouraged with appropriate timing (not always infront of clients). Students and staff alike are expected to show respect to all those that are encountered including staff, clients, and patents. Our clinic is open 8am-5pm, Monday - Friday, 8am-12pm on Saturday with 24-hour emergency services available. Depending on which doctor the student is riding with Monday-Friday, the days can start earlier or extend beyond 5pm, but work weeks 50+ hours are not typical. Students are not expected to work on weekends. Depending on what the student is interested in experiencing, they can choose to participate in emergency calls as they so desire but they are not required. The student will get asked prior to arriving and throughout, if they would like to be called for emergencies, and if so, what type if not all. Typical emergency calls consist of prolapses, calvings, lambing, kiddings, etc.

We promote excellent communication. The student will not be expected to participate in or perform a procedure they are not comfortable with. However, communication needs to be exercised if a situation as such arises.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

There is a student duplex available for student use upon request in the same parking lot as the clinic at no cost to the student. Duplex has bedrooms and kitchen that is fully furnished with basic amentities and all items needed to cook with. Kitchen appliances include oven, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, toaster, washer/dryer. Students are expected to purchase their own food for the duration of their stay in the duplex.

The duplex is not pet friendly at this time.
