Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Steamboat Animal Hospital has a dedicated pet health care team of over 40 employees, including 7 outstanding, caring veterinarians.  Our veterinary health care team ranges from New grads to tenured veterinarians of 30+ years in practice.  Our practice offers digital x-ray and digital dental x-ray, ultrasound, reproduction services, orthopedics and forensic medicine.  Steamboat Animal Hospital is also within a collaborative network of 14 other veterinary practices (among, WA, OR and AZ) offering services in avian/exotic medicine, holistic, behavior modification, laproscopic, and rehabilitation services.  We are collaborative in our approach to each case to provide the best medical care, diagnostics and treatment to each pet and education to their owners.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are strongly encouraged to have a hands on, interactive approach.  A can-do attitude and eagerness to learn and be engaged is required!  Students will have a designated DVM mentor assigned to shadow during their experience.  They will work the same schedule as that DVM to foster a strong mentoring relationship beyond the few weeks they are in hospital with our team.  We are open from 7 AM to 8 PM Monday through Friday and 9 AM to 6 PM Saturday and Sunday.  We do care for hospitalized pets but do not offer canine boarding or ER over night shifts.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Students will have access to free lodging in a private, 2-bedroom, and waterfront apartment (sorry no pets!)  Interns may share the apartment with another student (CVM candidate or LVT candidate)!  During free time, students can easily enjoy hiking local trails or taking day trips to the Hood Canal, Mt. Rainier or the Pacific Ocean!  Students can also enjoy kayaking on provided kayaks, beach-combing, and shopping at the farmers market in Washington’s state capitol of Olympia!
