Description of Elective Experience: 

Our externships are a great next step in your veterinary education and career while putting into practice the skills and knowledge you’ve already learned in school. Under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, you will:

  • Pork Quality Assurance and PQA site assessments
  • Audit preparation and readiness
  • Biosecurity management
  • Health monitoring and disease surveillance
  • Boar-stud oversight
  • Export testing and inspections
  • Mortality analysis
  • Production record analysis
  • Disease diagnosis and management
  • Sow housing systems
  • Batch farrowing
  • Disease eradication Plans
  • Surgeries
  • Employee training and development of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Vaccination programs
  • Nutritional review and oversight
  • Ventilation set up and troubleshooting
  • Pig flow analysis
  • Show pig health protocols, procedures and surgeries
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Stoney Creek Veterinary Service and Consultation has 3 veterinarians on staff, 1 veterinarian technician, 3 laboratory technician, 4 sales support staff, 1 operations manager and 1 business manager.  At our office we have surgical suite, bovine reproduction area, mobile surgical trailer, clinic laboratory, product warehouse, and office area.  Each of our doctors specializes in different segments of our business; commercial swine products, show pig exhibition, and bovine production with a strong focus in reproduction.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

During a student’s externship, they are expected each day to observe and assist one of our staff veterinarians.  We make sure that we rotate the veterinarians so that externship is diversified.  Our work week is Monday- Friday 7:00AM-5:00PM.  Emergency calls are seasonal.  We also provide time for the extern to observe the clinic’s standard operating procedures.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

We provide fully furnished housing for externships. We don't allow any pets in our student housing.
