Description of Elective Experience: 

To shadow and assist small animal practicioners and be allowed to participate in technical procedures and assist in dentals and surgeries within the limits of the Florida State Veterinary practice laws. The stated supervisor will discuss and plan the "experience" with extern prior to beginning and will designate specific veterinarians to assist in the experience.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

There are 6 veterinarian practicioners on staff with a minimum of 3 scheduled daily Mon.-Fri. and 2 on Sat. We have 3 receptionists, 3 exam/lab techs, 3 Treatment techs and 2 Ward staff that serve as support staff. Equipment includes Idexx Chem, CBC, lytes plus Sedivue as well as Ultrasound, radial surgical unit and digital radiography.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student will be scheduled 80 hours during the externship inclusive of office hours 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Mon-Fri. and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat. Experience will include shadowing doctors in exam rooms, assisting with client communication, dispensing and administration of medications as well as selectively participating in some cytology and other lab duties and the assessment and plan for hospital patients. Approximately half the day will be with the veterinarian (daily rotation) doing anesthetic procedures inclusive of dentals and surgeries.
