Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will have the opportunity for mentorship in all areas of our practices. Our 4 week externship program includes rotations in customer care, patient exam room visits and internal medicine, radiology, laboratory procedure development, clinical pathology proficiency development, dentistry, soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries (fracture repair, TTA and CBLO cruciate ligament repair, femoral head ostectomy, patella luxation stabilization), acupuncture, rehabilitation (therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular electro-stimulation, therapeutic laser) and physical therapy.  Students will receive hands-on training in all of these areas of services provided by our hospitals, participate in doctor case discussions as well as journal article review and presentations. The majority of the student's time will be spent at The Animal Doctor headquarters facility with opportunities to spend time at other TAD Hospitals facilities for well-rounded, multi-community veterinary practice. The students work-week will consist of 40 hours per week during normal hospital office hours and work days. Housing assistance will be provided.

TAD Hospitals Inc. (The Animal Doctor—“TAD”—in Cary, TAD Crystal Lake and TAD Sycamore) are full service AAHA-accredited small animal hospitals located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Our hospitals provide a wide range of training and employment opportunities for new veterinarians and students alike. Our medical staff includes two Diplomates of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice), a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner, a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist and a Certified Fear-Free veterinarian. Our technical staff includes four certified veterinary technicians and a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner.  Our veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants and customer care representatives are well-trained and provide excellent support.

TAD Hospitals are well-equipped with:

·Epica GT-30 Pico CT-scan with Vimersion™;

·GE Vivid™, Versana™ and NextGen LOGIC-E™ Ultrasound machines with standard, linear and multiple cardiac transducers;

·VETEL digital radiography with Metron™ software management; 

·ImageWorks and Corix dental radiography;

·A complete in-house laboratory with clinical pathology slide scanning capability directly uploaded to a pathologist;

·Video microscopy, and;

·ABAXIS and IDEXX blood gas, blood chemistry, urine, coagulation profiles equipment and point of care Idexx snap tests

 The 21,000 square foot Cary, IL TAD headquarters includes a patent-pending, first-of-its-kind 10,000 sf pet-client TAD WELLNESS CENTER (www.tadhospitals.com). This facility hosts a full workout facility for pets, pet-families and hospital staff with LifeFitness, Fitfurlife and Hammer-Strength equipment. A 3500 SF pet-client aerobic facility and a 3500 SF pet exercise and aquatic center are complete with 3 underwater treadmills and a dual-propulsion Endless Pool™. A social networking lounge with a full kitchen is available for employees, pets and client families as well.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The students 4 week externship will consist of 40 hours per week that will be scheduled during normal hospital office hours and work days.
