Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care Center (Thrive Pet Healthcare), FL

Description of Elective Experience:

TBVS offers externships in all specialty services and emergency medicine. We welcome any length of rotation (minimum 2 weeks). Students can rotate in a single discipline or combine multiple areas during one experience. The degree of hands-on involvement varies by service and student's stage of education.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are a 24/7 Emergency and specialty referral center. Our DVM team includes: 8 FT ER clinicians, surgery, oncology, ophthalmology, internal medicine, cardiology, dermatology, and neurology; each has its own dedicated nursing staff. We have ultrasound, endoscopy, 16-slice CT, and 1.5T MRI on site. Complete point-of-care laboratory diagnostic suite (CBC, Chemistry, PT/PTT, blood gas)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

40-hour scheduled week. The day and time vary with the service schedule. Students are expected to be punctual, exhibit professional behavior, and be active participants in their learning. Attendance at case transfer rounds is required if on a specialty service rotation. Hands-on experience in basic procedural skills are available and encouraged (i.e. IV catheter placement, venipuncture, cytology). Students may be asked to obtain patient histories, participate in discussions on case management/medical knowledge, and complete client communications where appropriate.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Student housing is provided through our Thrive externship program. Pet-friendly accommodations are available. The typical selection is a Residence Inn hotel in close proximity to the hospital.
