Toledo Zoo and Aquarium, OH

Description of Elective Experience: 

The Toledo Zoo has an animal population of over 10,000 animals and the Animal Health and Nutrition Department consists of three full-time veterinarians, three full time veterinary technicians, and three full-time commissary stewards.  The student will be primarily under the direction of the veterinarians but will work closely with all team members. 

Students will spend 2-8 weeks assisting the veterinarians and zoo staff with all aspects of clinical zoological medicine, including but not limited to: daily animal care, medical rounds, general medicine and surgery, clinical pathology, radiology, pathology, and record keeping.  Students are encouraged to make use of the literature and other resources available to prepare for procedures and current cases. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

3 full time veterinarians

3 full time vet techs

3 full time commisary keepers.

Equipment available includes:  Mobile and stationary digital radiology, mobile and stationary anesthesia units, endoscopy, mobile ultrasound, in-house lab for bloodwork, fecals, etc.  

In-house library available.

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students will spend 2-8 weeks assisting the veterinarians and zoo staff with all aspects of clinical zoological medicine, including but not limited to: daily animal care, medical rounds, general medicine and surgery, clinical pathology, radiology, pathology, and record keeping.  Students are encouraged to make use of the literature and other resources available to prepare for procedures and current cases. 

Students will be expected to keep a daily log of their activities, track the hours they work, and a short-term project or clinical case presentation is required prior to completion of their rotation.  Topics will be discussed upon arrival.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Housing is not guaranteed, as it is shared other departments and contingent on availability.  Students can inquire prior to their preceptorship to see availability.
