Description of Elective Experience:

Trans Ova Genetics is excited to host students with a passion for bovine and small ruminant reproduction at our Sioux Center, IA corporate headquarters. Students will have the opportunity to learn the techniques of advanced reproductive technologies including ovum pick up/IVF, convention embryo flushing, embryo transfer and cloning as well as associated physiology, synchronization, superovulation/stimulation, and embryo evaluation and cryopreservation techniques. Hands on opportunities are available through employee training program, TOGU, based on department availability and student interest. Additional opportunities in dairy calf management and heard health may arise.

Students can apply through the Trans Ova Genetics career page on our website.  A complete application includes submission of a resume, cover letter, and letter of recommendation from an ET practitioner, or food animal/theriogenology professor.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Two reproduction focused veterinarians and three herd health veterinarians work at the Sioux Center location along with 4 production assistants, 6 embryologists, and 5 reproduction technicians and all are excited to teach and work with students.

The team utilizes EI Medical/EVO II  and III ultrasounds with rectal and opu transducers.

Paperless records are maintained with associated data entry applications.

Seven chutes include a mixture of hydraulic, manual and hydraulic tilt table units. All working facilities are indoor with heating and most with AC.

Lab equipment includes Olympus microscopes including training microscopes.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The majority of the experience related to ART is shadowing based, with assistance expected in donor and recipient handling, movement, and restraint and data entry. However, every effort is made to ensure hands on opportunities with training animals and lab space is made available, but can vary depending on season, and team availability.

Students will also have an actual support role in the case of donor or recipient medical cases as they arise.

Hours are 8-5 Monday through Friday, with no evening or weekend responsibilities.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Housing is available at one of  two Trans Ova owned hoses or 2 apartments at no cost to students. Students will have their own bedroom but may share living space with other employees in training or other visitors. Housing is not pet friendly.

If students are flying in to the area,  Sioux Falls and Omaha are recommended. Sioux Cith may be an option, but rental cars may be more difficult to reserve,  as TOG vehicles are not available to externs.
