Tropicana Animal Hospital, NV

Description of Elective Experience:

We have 17 hospitals in our group that we rotate students.  We transport students to different hospitals so that they can observe a variety of management and client engagement styles.  We take students to dinner once and sometimes twice a week.  We invite a variety of our Associate veterinarians and Practice Managers to these dinners so that students can ask questions and get perspective on veterinary medicine.  We limit participation in our program to 3rd and 4th year students.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our hospitals are equipped with complete in-house laboratories.  We also have an Antech Reference Laboratory housed in our Specialty Center that provides 3x pick ups.  We have digital radiography in all of our hospitals with consultation available from VitalRads.  All of the hospitals have ultrasound and 90% of the hospitals have flexible and rigid endoscopy.  Our smallest facility has 5 practitioners and our largest has 11 veterinarians.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Our hospitals are open 7 days a week.  Students would work Monday thru Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm.  The student will be very much involved in animal handling, medical planning and treatment

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We provide individual housing.  The student will have their own room with a refridgerator and microwave.  The facility does not allow pets for short term guests.
