Description of Elective Experience: 

General small animal practice in suburban Akron/Canton area. Student would gain experience in a general practice setting where best medicine is offered and recommended. We follow currently accepted standards of care.

Also learning to work with the pet owner with budget constraints and providing the best care possible within their desires and budget.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Adequate staffing per doctor. Registered technicians are used as much as they are comfortable and capable of.

Digital x-ray with extensive use of VetRad. Digital dental x-ray. Ultrasound used extensively. Doppler blood pressure. Electrocautery. Various anesthetic monitoring devices. Full in-house Idexx lab. Video microscope. Tonovet. Idexx ECG for remote telemedicine consults.

Access to full library of textbooks and VIN

Traveling board certified surgeon used in-house for more complicated surgeries (TPLOs primarily).

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Practice is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 6 pm and Saturdays 8 am to 2 pm. Student would be expected to be available 1 to 3 week days from 8 am to 6 pm but that is flexible. Student would be paired with a staff veterinarian on each day and be expected to run appointments and do surgeries as they became comfortable.
