Description of Elective Experience: 

Our rotation provides an array of exposure to clinical and project support procedures on a large variety of animals used in research and teaching at the UCD campus.  We work with traditional mice and rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, sheep, pigs, cats, chickens and an assortment of other species.  Students will participate in veterinary review of animal care and use protocols, will participate in a hands on wet lab with traditional research animals.  As part of the rotation, students will be required to produce a species handout meant to be used for teaching other students and will prepare a presentation to be given to our clinic staff on a research animal topic and will participate in our resident seminar.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have a small staff and a diverse array of equipment used for clinical management of conditions - both spontaneous and protocol related in our research animals.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Hours are 8-5 Monday -Friday.

 There are no required afterhours or weekend work.  Students will be shadowing staff members - not providing any actual support.
