University of Wisconsin, Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine (Dentistry)

Description of Elective Experience:

The visiting student will work with, and be given the same responsibilities as our in-house students.   Students will be responsible for being the primary point person for initially taking patient histories, performing physical exams and proposing treatment plans.  Students will perform dental cleanings, local blocks and position for dental radiographs.  Students will help with post-operative patient care and discharges.  Fridays afternoons students will have an opportunity to practice dental extractions on cadavers.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our dentistry service has 2 boarded faculty members, 3 residents and 2 technicians.   Our dental suite has 2 tables and we operate 12-16 patients per week.  We see an additional 10 patients as consulations both as awake or under general anesthesia for other services.  Our caseload is a mixture of primary care, first opinion cases (more routine type procedures) and also comprises of referral dental cases (orthodontics, root canal therapies and advanced oral surgery procedures.)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to be present Monday-Friday.  Additionally, ward duty or critical care unit duty may be assigned by the supervisors of those areas.  This is a normal add-on responsibility of students on our rotation.  Hours are approximatly 7:30-8am until the end of the day, typically 6pm.  Occasionally cases may go later.  Students are not expected, but are invited to particiapte in after-hours dental emergencies.  Cases are rare.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Student housing is not provided hower JoAnn Disch in the Office of Academic Affairs seems to have good success helping to advertise when a student is looking for a place to stay- an email is sent out the vet school students.
