Valley West Veterinary Hospital, WV

Description of Elective Experience:

We are interested in helping you gain the skills and knowledge to allow you to hit the ground running after you graduate!  Our mixed practice mainly services dogs and cats, but also horses and goats, and occasional pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets.  You will perform physical exams, discuss treatment plans, and observe client communication on a daily basis . Student who have worked with us assist in medical  treatments, surgery, induction, dentistry, ultrasound, and endoscopy.  We have a few veterinarians who would welcome you to ride along and assist on farm calls if you so desire. We have two offices-one is a more urban practice in the capitol city of Charleston, the other is a smaller more rural practice 10 minutes away in Elkview. Our clientele is diverse and we offer a broad spectrum of care. Students who have come to us in the past have been able to spend their spare time exploring all the adventures that Wild and Wonderful West Virginia has to offer such as whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking in the mountains (usually with their dogs) and, if the season is right, skiing.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have 7 DVMs (OSU, Georgia, Perdue, and Virginia Tech grads) that range from 2 to 39 years post DVM graduation.  Our main hospital in Charleston has a full in house Idexx laboratory, ultrasound, a dental suite with dental radiology and high speed drills, a surgery suite complete with orthopedic plating equipment, and a therapeutic laser. One of our veterinarians performs acupuncture. We are a certified Gold Cat Friendly Practice at this location as well.  Our Elkvew hospital also has a 2 stall barn with indoor stocks for large animal haul in, and a portable x-ray unit. Our staff has low turnover and consists of several trained assistants and RVTS, one with certification in dentistry. Please visit our website for a better feel of who we are!
