VCA Great Lakes Veterinary Specialists, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Students have the opportunity to complete elective rotations in: Internal Medicine, Emergency/Critical Care, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Surgery, or a combination of any of the above.  During the elective block students will spend time on the selected service, and will work directly with the attending clinician on new case evaluation and work up, as well as management of patients on that service that are admitted to the hospital.

All hospital rounds are held everyday from 8:30-9:30 in the conference room. There is also a didactic lecture every Tuesday morning for our interns, and journal club every other Thursday.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our staff consists of 20 veterinarians including 10 board certified specialists in Internal medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Radiology and Critical Care.

Our hospital is equipped with a complete in-house laboratory including blood gas and coagulation analysis, in-house blood bank, ultrasound, digital radiology, CT, MRI access, I-131, chemotherapy, designated orthopedic and soft tissue surgical suites, rigid and flexible endoscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy. In addition, we have telemetry, defibrillator, oxygen cages and a mechanical ventilator.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to work the schedule of the attending doctor, which is typically 10 hour days, 4-5 days a week.  They will be given learning objectives, will do some shadowing, and will play an active role on the selected service. Based on their technical skill set, they will be allowed to do procedures such as venipuncture, IV catheter placement, esophagostomy tube placement, nasogastric tube placement, nasal oxygen line placement, and emergency ultrasound (TFAST/AFAST).

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):
