VCA McClave Animal Hospital, CA

Description of Elective Experience:

Two weeks will be spent shadowing doctors at VCA McClave.  Our staff doctors are assigned either appointment receiving, surgery and dentistry or urgent care and our externs will rotate along with their assigned doctor.  A 40 hr week is expected M-F with a possibility of weekend accommodations if desired (not expected).  Multiple opportunities for following inpatient and outpatient cases, client communication with hands-on opportunity as cases allow.  Externs are expected to be present for patient examinations with the client, conduct their own exam, develop a problem list and a plan and as time allows, follow up on a case. Externs are encouraged to observe surgeries and scrub-in if indicated and become familiar with prophylactic dental cleaning and radiology.  Students are able to participate in all aspects of treatment and hospitalization, if any.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

VCA McClave is a 10-Doctor hybrid practice that has extended hours 7 days a week.   All doctors are GP's and are split into receiving either appointments or urgent care patients.   Our hospital is well equipped and staffed with long term doctors who have extensive experience mentoring new graduates.  We have an ultrasound machine, in house diagnostic CBC/Chem/Coag/blood gas, blood transfusion products (hemopet), digital radiography with Antech Imaging Specialty support, O2 cage.  Being that we are a hybrid hospital with a large urgent care caseload, we perform a variety of soft tissue surgery.  Orthopedic surgery is however limited to tail and toe amputation and other minor procedures
