During this elective, the student will rotate through our different departments for a well-rounded experience. The student will spend time with our surgery, internal medicine, general practice, integrative medicine, emergency/ICU, and exotics departments. The student will be encouraged to perform clinical skills as much as able and comfortable during this shadowing experience.
The practice has a CT, Cardell associated with every anesthetic machine (approx. 10), 3 different ultrasounds (1 of which is a tabletop ultrasound, the other 2 full machines), digital dental radiography, and digital radiography. There is a large staff of approximately 10 doctors, 30 technicians, 5 support staff (managers, supply/order, etc.) and 6 CSR's. The doctors have monthly mortality and morbidity rounds, journal club, and a doctor's meeting. There is also a large library with plenty of support material for the student during this externship.
Fortunately, because of the variety of specialties and departments, the student can design their experience based on their needs and interests. Typically, schedule will be 2, 12 hour shifts and 2, 8 hour shifts for a total of 40 hours per week. Typically, students have spent the 2, 12 hour shifts in ER/ICU or General Practice and the 2, 8 hour shifts with any of the specialties. The student will intimately work alongside the doctor from the beginning to end of each case and be involved in history attainment, physical exam, diagnostics, and treatment plan creation. Again, student will be encouraged to participate and assist in as much as able/comfortable.
