Externship involving on-site experience with board certified Ophthalmologist, Radiologist, Surgeon, Internal Medicine Specialist, Neurologist, Dermatologist, Anesthesiologist, and Oncologist. This is in addition to shifts in the Emergency Room and Critical Care Wards with ER doctors admitting cases. Externs attend cage side rounds and formal rounds.
We also have a fully staffed, 24-hour ICU and emergency service. Our hospital includes a radiology department with digital radiography, new ultrasound, 1.5 Tesla MRI, dual slice CT, and an electrodiagnostic machine. VCA NWVS has 5 surgery suites, each equipped with dedicated monitoring equipment—Direct BP, ECG, SPO2, CO2, BP—as well as veterinary specific ventilators. Our surgery department also has CO2 laser, endoscopy, arthroscopy, bronchoscopy, and fluoroscopy capabilities. We maintain the most current critical care therapeutic modalities and programs to support our most critical patients: an on-site blood bank, formulation of parenteral nutrition, mechanical ventilatory support, in-house complete diagnostic laboratory, Doppler and pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, and telemetry. This year sees the completion of installation of our radiation therapy unit. When the Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator is installed and open to the public in January 2020, VCA NWVS will be able to deliver radiation using the advanced technique IMRT.
• Practice obtaining a thorough, pertinent history and PE based on the presenting situation and clinical condition of the patient
• Working through a case from start to finish discussing what dx and tx modalities are appropriate for that case ( and deciding which dx/tx are most valuable when factors such as limited finances come into play)
• Exposure to effective client communications
• A Specialist or ER doctor involved each step of the way
• When time permits and evaluation of students deems appropriate, students are placed in more of a technical position where they can gain experience in placing IV catheters, evaluating ICU in house patients, monitoring surgery and anesthesia, etc ( essentially more of the technical side).
• They work side by side with the clinician as doctors( instead of on the technician level).
• They cannot diagnose or prescribe – their activities and actions have to go through a senior clinician
