VCA Shoreline Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center, CT

Description of Elective Experience:

As part of our commitment to mentoring the next generation of Veterinarians, VCA Shoreline Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Shelton, Connecticut is pleased to offer Externships to DVM students in their 3rdand 4th years of school.

As part of your Externship, you will follow cases from start to finish.   You’ll be supervised and evaluated by one our Doctors as you interact with clients, take patient histories, observe treatments, and discuss case dynamics.

Like Students that have completed Externships with us in the past, we believe that you will gain valuable insights into the kind of practice you’ll want to join after graduation.  And if your goals include applying for an Internship with our hospital, this is an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate your skills and academic knowledge in front of our Intern Director—as you both aim to find a mutual fit.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Externs have exposure to internal medicine, cardiology, surgery, radiology, oncology, critical care, neurology, and emergency day and night receiving.

The academic part of the program consists of daily didactic lectures, which consist of in-depth discussions in neurology, radiology, cardiology, ECG interpretation, surgery, critical care, and internal medicine topics. There is also a weekly journal club, daily case rounds, M&M rounds etc.

The hospitals are fully equipped with the diagnostic and therapeutic tools to handle all medical, critical care, surgical, and neurosurgical patients. Equipment includes spiral double slice CT scanner, MRI, hemodialysis, full scoping capability including laparoscopy, gastroduodenoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, telemetry, abdominal ultrasound, Vivid 7 echocardiography, and digital radiography.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to participate in a full work week, the work week is flexible dependent on student needs and interests. Weekends and evenings are especially busy times for the practice, and we encourage students to participate in a shift or two to round out the experience, though this is not a requirement. Students are welcome to shadow a particlar specialty, or bounce around to experience all aspects of the hospital. We also reccomend students interested in pursing our internship program pay a visit to our sister hospital in Norwalk. These scheduling details are worked out after the application process.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We have a small dorm style room in the hospital that externs are welcome to use provided the room hasn't been reserved. The room is first come first serve.
