Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will observe surgeries, including but no limited to: sex altering, mass removals, and dental cleanings with extractions.  Students will also have the opportunity to observe wellness exams on puppies and kittens, annual exams, sick patients, euthanaisa and farm animals brought into the clinic., lameness in companion and performace animals which incorporate traditional diagnostics as well as Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine,  Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy and Veterinary Rehabilitation Therapy to diagnose and treat patients with a multimodal or holistic approach.    They have the opportunity to ride along on farm calls for horses, goats, sheep, hogs, and cattle.   We enjoy answering questions and teaching necessary skills to complete their Veterinary education.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Our staff consists of two veterinarians certified in Acupuncture and Veterinary Spinal Manipilation and one veterinarian trained in rehab and certified in Low Stress Handling (Sophia Yin).  One of our Veterinarians has a strong interest in small ruminant medicine including llamas and goats and the occasional porcine patient.  Between the veterinarians on staff we have over 100 years of combined experience.  Our equipment consisit of  an in-house reference lab  2 cold therapy lasers, digital xray unit, ultrasound and 2 Cardell anesthetic monitoring units.   We have portable xray and ultrasound units, as well as, endoscopes used at the local harness racing tracks.We have 3 licensed veterinary technicians, all certified in Fear Free patient handling and one is a certified pet dog trainer.  Our veterinary assistants and staff are also Fear Free Certified. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Office hours are Monday and Wednesday 8am-7pm, Tuesday and Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-6pm. We cover small animal emergencies for our clients until 9 pm and large animal 24/7. We can work around the applicants schedule and availability to make sure they get the most of their experience at Veterinary Associates.  

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Student housing is typically available at Dr. Jon Ellis's house located mintues from the clinic.  At this time, due to Covid-19, we are discussing with each extern to determine if housing is available.
