The extern will learn initial patient assessment, preoperative planning/preparation, anesthetic protocol, intra-operative skills, post-operative assessment, recovery/rehabilitation techniques.
VOSM is a sub-specialty hospital focusing on orthopedics, sports medicine, rehabilitation and neurology. Our staff consists of eight doctors (including interns and residents) and a support staff of 55. We conduct numerous research projects including surgical outcome statistics, product and technique studies and regenerative medicine therapies. Our total annual caseload averages 12,000. Our 16,000 square foot facility is equipped with state-of-the-art veterinary orthopedic and rehabilitative equipment, including four operating rooms, dedicated arthroscopy suites, regenerative medicine lab, fluoroscopy, CFX and BFX total hip systems, all CCL systems, and all internal and external fixation devices. We also perform neurosurgeries, frequently utilize custom braces, and have MRI and access to CT. We also utilize an objective gait analysis system, a canine gym, underwater treadmills and a resistance pool.
In consults, the extern will assist with orthopedic assessment and lameness assessment. The extern will learn how we use our objective gait analysis system and observe radiographic interpretation. In pre-operative planning and preparation the extern will assist and learn proper patient preparation including shaving, surgical prep and scrub and proper patient monitoring. In surgery the extern will assist with procedures, learn instrument ID and observe surgical decision making. The extern will learn pain assessment and incision/surgical site assessment post-operatively. The extern will also shadow and assist in rehabilitation learning the various modalities of therapy used in sports medicine.
