Veterinary Specialty Center, IL

Description of Elective Experience:

The student experience at VSC allows students to witness and be a part of a busy multidisciplinary specialty hospital. We want students to integrate into the practice and gain an understanding of the level of medicine that is possible in private practice. For the most part, students are involved in shadowing the specialists but can have some primary responsibility (depending on the service they are on). We expect student externs to be self-motivated and engage in the discussion and questions/answers.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Specialties include: surgery, internal medicine, oncology, nephrology, cardiology, radiology, emergency and critical care

Equipment is comensurate with the high level of care we provide- rigid and flexible endoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear imaging, thermography, linear accelerator, digital radiology, surgical lasers, rehabilitation....

We are staffed 24/7/365

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are involved in our didactic teaching rounds and journal club. We have these 3-4 days per week.

Students are involved in daily hospital/ICU rounds

Students are involved directly with the specialists in the discipline they choose. They see cases, help with procedures and patient care and are involved in case discussions.

Hours depend on the discipline they choose.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

In many situations, we can have students stay with our staff members. We do this on a case-by-case basis. We also have corporate discounts at the Extended Stay America that is in the same parking lot as our hospital.
