Description of Elective Experience: 

To provide a high quality clinical experience for 4th year veterinary students in a 24 hour multi-specialty referral and emergency practice with an emphasis on high quality advanced clinical practice. In addition we have a strong didactic program for interns & externs.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Services offered at VSH are internal medicine, emergency medicine/critical care, surgery, neurology/neurosurgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology & dentistry. There is also a pharmacist on site. VSH has 22 specialists, 5 residents and 13 interns.

Externs will participate in all didactic activities, which include lectures given by the specialists twice weekly, weekly radiology rounds & monthly grand rounds.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Externs are paired with the interns as they rotate through the services. Externs will participate in receiving, writing SOAPs & patient care. Externs may have the opportunity to perform some minor procedures and they will observe a wide variety of procedures & surgery.

8 hours/day and 40 hours/week. Externs are expected to be present from 8:30 am-5:00 pm. Given that we are 24/7 hospital, externs are welcome to stay longer hours or work on weekends if they would like to do so.
