Description of Elective Experience: 

Vytelle (pronounced Vy-tel-ee) is a global precision livestock company reshaping how cattle producers worldwide unlock animal performance. Our portfolio includes a world class bovine phenotypic and genotypic data capture system via Vytelle SENSE and Vytelle INSIGHT which enables producers to accurately select desired traits to continually produce elite progeny, coupled with Vytelle ADVANCE In Vitro Fertilization Service, which enhances the speed at which genetic improvement can be made.  

As a Vytelle Intern, you will experience first-hand how our global team of industry experts are working to bring a new certainty to performance, health and genetic progress. At Vytelle, the Bovine Reproductive Specialist (DVM) is an integral part of our global team to help bring certainty to genetic progress in livestock. The DVM will perform ovum pickup procedures, embryo transfers, and work alongside team members to perform all duties associated with embryo production, data entry, and  communication while adhering to Vytelle standard operating procedures.  

Our externship experiences run in two week blocks and are open to 3rd and 4th year DVM students with a strong interest in advanced bovine reproduction.  

Responsibilities would include: 

  • Working side-by-side with Vytelle’s veterinarians and embryologists.  
  • Experiencing and participating in ovum pickup (OPU) events and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) processes. No FSH required.  
  • Gaining specialized industry knowledge, training, and experience that will directly apply to future practices.  
  • Customizing an externship experience that brings you closer to your professional goals and accommodates your academic schedule.  
  • Establishing connections and networking with talented industry professionals across the company.   
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The field operations teams are spread out around the United States and several other countries with 7 U.S. IVF labs and collection sites dispersed around those laboratories. The intern will be under direct supervision of a veterinarian (DVM) while learning about field operations and under the direct supervision of a lab manager while working in the IVF laboratory. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students shadow during OPU and ET about 3-4 days per week, 1-2 days per week are available for time spent in the laboratory observing and learning IVF processes, 1 day per week is available for being involved with vet team meetings and educational rounds/presentations.

There is housing available with this externship experience. Transportation to and from the rental house and field operations events arranged or students can provide their own vehicle.  No pets allowed at the guest housing.  Food and additional travel not covered.
