Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will work with both Chief and Staff Veterinarians with daily surgical load (spay/neuter, any specialty procedures) and medical cases (wide range of conditions.  They will have hands on experience with all cases during the scheduled externship period.  They may have an opportunity to do field work with our Animal Control Officers and observe any Animal Cruelty Court Cases scheduled.    

 WCAC has an intake of 7,000-9,000 animals per year mainly consisting of dogs & cats.   We also see most pocket pets (rabbits, ferret, guinea pigs, etc) and the occasional small ruminant or poultry.   

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Chief Veterinarian is the primary surgeon and Staff Veterinarian is the primary medical provider.  Support staff is 1 RVT and 3 trained assistants.  We have digital radiography, in house diagnostics (blood chemistry/CBC, ringworm culture, tonometry, etc).    

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students will work with the Vet Team Monday through Friday on 8 hour shifts.  This will be predominantly "hands on" with the students performing most of the work within their personal skill level.   They will be supervised and assisted through all procedures.
