Description of Elective Experience: 

This is a Laboratory Animal Medicine rotation with an emphasis on Non-human primate medicine and pathology.  Our program has 4 campuses with a large variety of research programs and species that are used.  The students will have opportunities to engage and manage clinical cases in a variety of species and settings.

In addition, we have a LAM residency and a Veterinary Pathology training program.  Student will participate in on-going didactic courses and training for these programs, which include grand rounds, journal club, courses and pathology conference.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have 4 ACLAM boarded veterinarians that oversee clinical and training activities along with 2 clinical veterinarians that will be involved with  clinical case work.  We have 2, LAM residents in the program. Also we have 10 veterinary technicians that help facilitate triage and treatments. 

In addition we have a full veterinary diagnostic pathology program with 4 boarded veterinary pathologist that oversee the program and training for students and residents.  And 2 veterinary pathology residents in the program.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

This is an 8-5, Mon-Friday, rotation.  No after-hours or weekend duty is expected.  The student will always be supervised.  They will take on individual cases, and be expected to work the case from beginning to end, to include PE, diagnostics as required, treatment plan etc.  And participating in didactic training activities is expected.

Self- motivation and ability to work/study independently is encouraged, in order to get the most benefit out of this rotation.
