Wayne State University Division of Laboratory Animal Resources, MI

Description of Elective Experience:

This experience is an intensive laboratory animal experience at a medium sized public university.  The breadth of our program supports both rodent and non-rodent studies, encompassing various research needs including metabolic diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and behavioral diseases affecting human urban populations.  Additionally, our collaboration with the local VA hospital includes research important to veterans, including both warfare illness/injury and behavioral diseases that affect US veterans.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

3 ACLAM boarded veterinarians and 30 support staff are included in our division.  WE have a whole suite of support equipment consistent with a top 100 NIH funded public institution.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Typical schedule would be normal working hours during the week. Primarily, the student will be shadowing and have minimal direct animal contact, however the student will be exposed to higher level decision making, and research program administration, which is almost always overseen by a veterinarian.  Additionally, the student will be exposed to policy making decisions.
