West Toledo Animal Hospital, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Students will rotate through two hospitals that offer everything from critical care, emergency, surgery, and general wellness.  Students will have the opportunity to learn in a fast-paced work environment that will provide a unique and well-rounded experience.  We see a wide range of appointments including wellness, emergency, medical illness, critical care, surgical, and behavioral.  Students will also rotate through surgery including spay/neuter, soft tissue, and orthopedic.  We average 6-10 surgeries a day and 5-10 inpatients that students will be able to round on.   We have in-house radiology which includes X-ray, ultrasound, and the only whole-body CT in northwest Ohio.  Students will also be involved with Dentistry in which we utilize our CT machine for imaging.   We also have many specialties including PRP, acupuncture, laser, cryotherapy, chiropractic, hydrotherapy, orthopedic and arthritic rehabilitation, and behavioral training.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our hospitals have 6 Board Certified DVMs, most of which have been certified in different specialties. We also have an IVCA Certified Animal Chiropractor and Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner who heads the rehabilitation team and chiropractic services.  We also have experienced certified RVTs who assist with surgery and with appointments.  We have in-house pharmacy, lab, and radiology services.  Our radiology services include ultrasound, X-Rays, and whole-body CT machine.  We have an updated computer software program that is easy to use and integrates well with radiology, laboratory, and online pharmacy services.  Each hospital has 6 examination rooms, a surgical suite, and a spacious treatment area.  We also have 3 underwater treadmills and two large rehabilitation areas.  We invite students of all educational levels to come tour our facilities.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

This will be a very hands-on and well-rounded experience.  The student will follow the DVM’s 4 day a week work schedule which consists of 36-40 hours.  Students will mostly be Monday through Friday, with possible 4 hours on Saturday.  Students will be expected to take appointments, come up with sound treatment plans, and present each treatment plan to the attending DVM.  Surgically the student will be performing and assisting different surgeries under the direct supervision of a DVM.  There will be numerous opportunities to work in critical care, rehabilitation, behavioral, and emergency cases, as well as be a part of our various specialties.  Students will also assist in radiology including our whole body CT for imaging.  Student’s will be supported by our very knowledgeable staff and attending DVM who also graduated from The Ohio State University.
