Description of Elective Experience: 

Small animal preventative, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, dentistry.  Intern will be exposed and participate in wide variety of small animal medical and surgical cases with hands on experience.  Well equipped, full inhouse IDEXX Lab, digital radiography, Ultrasound.  We are well known in the Columbus area for treating sick pets with 5 star google reviews.  Cases include:  Diabetes Mellitus, Diabetes Insipidus, complex pancreatitis, Feline Urological Syndrome with/without urinary tract blockage, otitis externa, media, allergic dermatitis, Flea allergy dermatitis. fear free care is our mainstay.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Three licensed Veterinary Technician/nurses who have 20+ years of experience in the field, Dr Duffus has been in small animal and emergency practice for 30 years.  Cloud based Veterinary software.  Surgical cases: routine ovariohysterectomy, castration, mass removals, enucliations, cystotomies, gastrotomies/foreign body removals, eyelid tumor removals, dentals with extractions.  Radiography and Ultrasound.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student will be expected to shadow and have hands on experience as much as they are able:  performing physical exams, discussing exams with DVM and forming treatment plan within clients budget.  Placing IV catheters, blood draws, reading gram/cytology stains, reading fecal floatations and saline smears, interpreting U/A’s and CBC Chemistries and developing treatment plan.  Learning to manage time with records and treatments in fast paced practice and make use of assistance from Veterinary Technicians.
