Description of Elective Experience: 

Independent poultry health practice working with commercial egg producers. 95% commercial egg layer medicine 5% commercial meat duck medicine. This elective experience will be poultry medicine/flock health based with an emphasis on teaching preventative medicine approaches. Actual farm visits and types of activities will be dependent on the current challenges that are occuring at the time of the rotation. Typical farm or company visits include large volumes of poultry necropsy and pathology that student will be able to participate in fully with a licensed veterinarian. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

40 million birds total across premises and licensing in 17 states. 3 veterinarian practice.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Part of each week will constitute on farm visits including bird examination, necropsy sessions, sample collection, welfare program assessment. Remainder of each week will be office based reviewing lab results, writing reports, researching issues.

If necessary to travel overnight will attempt to cover hotel costs.
