Yarde Veterinary Services, IN

Description of Elective Experience:

The program will be overseen by Dr. Kyle A. Yarde, DVM. Graduate of Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine 2014.  The externship will be served at two veterinary clinics in rural Northeastern Indiana. The extern will be expected to split time evenly between the two practices depending on Dr. Yarde’s current schedule.  The extern will be Dr. Yarde's personal shadow and will interact with his team of technicians on a daily basis.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Yarde Veterinary Services is a food animal only clinic that sees farm calls, haul-ins, and emergencies.  The haul-in facility has a basic laboratory with centrifuge, microscope, and cold vaccine storage.  The working area has a full working cattle processing system with a hydraulic tilt chute.  Ambulatory services include everything from dairy herd health, small ruminant medicine, beef and swine consultation, and surgical and medical emergencies.

Auburn Animal Care Clinic is a small animal only clinic.  The clinic has all the features of modern veterinary medicine including digital radiography, ultrasound, in-house lab/UA/Blood machines, full pharmacy, and digital record keeping.  The clinic operates with 4 full-time veterinarians that keep a full general medicine and surgical schedule.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We expect our DVM student externs to closely shadow the veterinarian as if they were employed in the practice. This includes seeing appointments for 8 hour days Mon thru Fri, 1/2 day Saturdays, and on call for emergencies 24/7 while with us on externship.  We do allow for weekends and evenings off as desired by the student.  Students are always welcome to spend time with Dr. Yarde and his family.  Daily duties include working in hand with the veterinarian, practicing surgical technique on a supervised basis, helping determine medical prognosis, plan, and treatment, and working with the technician team at each clinic.  We strongly encourage our student externs to start putting their knowledge to practice and will routinely ask them to diagnose, manage, determine treatment, and present a case to the mentoring veterinarian before it is then implemented to the patient.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Includes ALL amenities, NOT pet friendly. Most meals will be provided while on externship as well
