Description of Elective Experience:
Veterinary externs work with the veterinary team which includes veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing medical care for the entire collection. A large component of the caseload involves rescue and rehabilitation of native Florida species- manatees, panther and black bears.
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:
The program is overseen by the Staff Veterinarian. There is also a full team of other veterinarians and technicians. The extern will also rotate through the husbandry departments to gain a broader education of working in a zoo.
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
Work 5 days a week, opportunities for weekends based on caseload, unique cases. Work day is 7am-5pm. Mostly shadowing the clinical veterinarians.
