Description of Elective Experience:

Animal And Avian Medical Center is a 6 DVM private practice located in Brunswick, Ohio (20 min SW of Cleveland).  Our veterinarians treat a large variety of species including dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and pot-bellied pigs, and reptiles.  Our newly renovated hospital is well equipped with in-house lab, digital x-ray and dental x-ray, ultrasound, rigid endoscopy, and more.  Our team based care will allow a student to learn to appreciate the wide variety of personalities that bring care to our patients and clients.  The high quality medical care, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dental services, and bird / small mammal / and exotic services that we offer to our clients is generally only outmatched by referral clinics.  This experience will allow a student to get a realistic appreciation of how a busy, small animal and exotic practice, that offers a large variety of services to a large variety of species, operates.

We are a busy 8 doctor practice with extended hours allowing us to treat a variety of cases.  Our available 24-hour technician care allows us to manage intensive medical and surgical cases.  We see a small number of exotic cases. Our hospital also provides grooming and has a large boarding department.

Countryside Veterinary Service welcomes students to observe and participate in the large animal department of our practice.  Students will be making farm calls with a large animal veterinarian and will gain experiences with equine lameness, equine dentistry, radiographs, lameness exams, prepurchase exams, equine ultrasound, bovine reproductive ultrasound, dairy herd health, bovine surgeries, preventative medicine for both bovine and equine and more.  While the majority of our focus is equine and bovine, we also service caprine, ovine and porcine.  We strive to provide a learning environment that allows the student gain practical experience.

Students will be able to observe and participate in all aspects of small animal medicine.  We offer dentistry, soft tissue and elective surgeries, internal medicine and inpatient and outpatient care.  Students will learn about client care along with patient care to be successful as a practitioner.  Opportunities to work closely with staff along with the doctor will allow students to develop communication skills, time management, and staff management.  Students will also learn about practice management, marketing, and financial considerations.

This is a sophisticated integrative medicine practice.  I and/or my associate are certified in chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese herbs, homotoxicology, ozone therapy, laser therapy, electromagnetic therapy, functional and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Food Therapy, and other modalities.  Our patients include horses small ruminants, dogs, cats and some exotics.  We stress excellent client communication and education and are well known for our extremely effective low-stress, no-fear animal handling techniques.  Many animals seen in our practice are top level competitors, also animals with unresponsive disease processes including cancer, auto-immune disorders, allergy and food sensitivity, behavioral disorders, epilepsy and chronic pain.  Canine rehabilitation and exercise therapy for post-surgical cases as well as preventative care are a growing part of the practice. Dr. Urban is certified in Canine Rehabilitation through the University of Tennessee, and she offers instruction to clients for active participation in at home rehab, therapy and fitting techniques. Students will be encouraged and allowed to observe, examine, and palpate some physical chararcteristics of the many unusual cases we treat.  Simple in-office techniques will observed and practiced as time allows.  The large animal practice includes sophisticated dentistry, farriery, behavioral therapy and all the integrative modalities as well. Our rotation provides an array of exposure to clinical and project support procedures on a large variety of animals used in research and teaching at the UCD campus.  We work with traditional mice and rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, sheep, pigs, cats, chickens and an assortment of other species.  Students will participate in veterinary review of animal care and use protocols, will participate in a hands on wet lab with traditional research animals.  As part of the rotation, students will be required to produce a species handout meant to be used for teaching other students and will prepare a presentation to be given to our clinic staff on a research animal topic and will participate in our resident seminar.

The Tampa Bay Vets Intern/Extern program is intended to provide an in-hospital learning opportunity for veterinary students who are interested in furthering their education and who are planning a future in our field.

Students will obtain real clinical experience during their 2 week externship. They will be shadowing the doctors in the exam rooms and performing physical exams. They will interpret diagnostic blood work and develop treatment plans with the doctors on duty.  Students will be assisting in dental and surgical procedures under doctor superision. Students will refine their skills in jugular blood draws and placement of IV catheters.

The student will be actively involved on the day to day work of a swine production medicine veterinarian.  He/She will be with the staff veterinarian overseeing the sow units and following those pigs the entire way to market weight visiting nurseries and finishers.  They will be exposed to interactions with contract growers, sow unit staff, and production team members, to better help their communication and problem solving skills.  Many times issues in food animal production medicine is management based and we will work through problems of nutrition and ventilation and how this greatly impacts swine health.  Vaccination protocols are a large focus area and we must review these often for the best health program.  Due to the new FDA guidelines around antibiotic usage he/she will be involved in reviewing records on how this affects the farm and alternatives to help decrease usage.
