Equine management, reproduction
Small animal practice - observe and participate/contribute to a wide variety of clinical material
The goal of this joint rotation at the Hatfield Marine Science Aquarium Visitor Center (HMSCAVC), Aquarium Science Teaching Aquarium (AQSTA) and the Oregon Coast Aquarium (OCA) is to allow the veterinary student to begin to solidify some of the knowledge and skills required to oversee in the health management of captive aquatic animals. The primary focus of this rotation will be on fish and invertebrate health management, with a smaller portion devoted to birds and mammals.
Our clinic, Piedmont Equine Associates, is located in Madison, Georgia approximately 60 miles
east of Atlanta and 25 miles south of Athens. We are a five doctor practice that offers
ambulatory and in-clinic services including: extensive reproduction services (artificial
insemination, embryo transfer, ICSI, stallion collection/standing, and foaling services), surgery
(a wide array of procedures with the exception of colic surgery), lameness/sports medicine,
internal medicine and intensive care, dentistry, emergency services, and routine preventive care.
Externs will assist in management of hospitalized patients and administering treatments/performing
exams, assisting during surgeries/procedures and during ambulatory calls. The student will be
paired with a veterinarian each day for in-depth discussion of cases and subjects within
the field of equine veterinary medicine. When time allows, journal club is held and the student
is expected to participate by presenting a current article of their interest. Help with weekend
treatments of hospitalized cases is also expected.
Student will have the opportunity to experience the day to day activities and practices of a Mixed Animal Clinic located in a Rural setting.

We are a small animal clinic that also specializes in exotics, as well. We have 5 doctors that work at our facility. We used Fear Free concepts when we designed our new facility to help create a less stressful experience for our patients. Students will be able to experience a large variety of cases as well as surgeries. The emphasis at our clinic is placed on client communication and partnering with our clients on care for their pets. We focus on client education and working with them on helping to insure their pets receive quality care. Our surgeries range from your typical procedures (growth removals, OVHs, neuters) to more complex procedures including some orthopedics. Our doctors are supportive and work together to provide continuity of care between patients. Our environment focuses on teamwork and working together. Students would have many opportunities to receive guidance and learn on a wide variety of topics of small animal veterinary clinic. While we see exotics, it is not mandatory that a student participate in these cases; however, if there is an interest they are more than welcome to be a part of these cases. We do see emergencies during our normal business hours; however, they are referred out to emergency referral centers outside of our normal hours.
