As a comprehensive private specialty hospital, we offer rotations through the following specialties: Critical Care, Dermatology, Emergency Services, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Cardiology, and Avian and Exotics. Individuals are paired with an attending clinician throughout the rotation as well as the intern on the service. The nature of involvement with cases is primarily an observational role although students are involved in case management discussion. Currently, all externship opportunities are at the Tampa location with the possibility to rotate to our Brandon and/or Clearwater locations.
The first day of your arrival begins with a tour of the facility and introduction to your senior clinician. Please arrive at 8:30 am on your first day and 8 am each day thereafter (please note that if you are on ER services, arrangements regarding start times will vary). General expectations of externs include attendance at didactics (rounds, journal club, and lectures). We invite you to attend continuing education opportunities hosted at our facility during your stay.
We do not have the ability to provide housing during your visit, but there are many local hotels nearby, and we also have a technician that rents out a room to visiting externs if you are interested. As there is not an application process, we just request a copy of your CV.

We pride ourselves in having a practice that provides high quality of medicine, while at the same time being a high volume practice. Our small animal medicine ranges from spaying/neutering to tumor and soft tissue surgery to internal medicine and wellness exams. Our large animal side ranges from DA/csections to internal medicine and herd health on cows/horses/goats/sheep/pigs.
Furthermore, another aspect of veterinary medicine is the understanding of the business/money part. As a result, we expose all of onsite volunteers/veterinary students to the fact that we work a difficult job that does not pay us for what we are worth, but at the same time we work in a profession that can give you a quality of life that you cannot get in other fields.
In closing, our practice enjoys teaching and giving students/volunteers the opportunity to experience what is great about this profession. At the same time we help them to understand what is not so great. Thus, we allow them to be exposed to the many aspects of the profession that a person will encounter working in a rural community mixed animal practice.
