Description of Elective Experience:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The SCWDS Veterinary Extern Program is intended to expose third- and fourth-year veterinary students to numerous aspects of wildlife population health. A significant amount of time is spent investigating the causes of wildlife mortality events from much of the eastern United States. This includes gross necropsy, histopathology, ancillary diagnostic testing, interpretation of results, and reporting. These investigations present abundant opportunities for discussion concerning the epidemiology, pathology, and management of numerous wildlife diseases; some of which also have implications for domestic animal and human health. The cooperative structure of SCWDS provides students with insight into the various roles veterinarians play in wildlife disease research, diagnostics, and management.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The veterinary students will: (1) acquire an understanding of the role of veterinarians in the maintenance of healthy wildlife populations, (2) gain insights into the relationships and interactions of wildlife management and wildlife health, and (3) recognize and understand the importance of select major diseases of free-ranging wildlife.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners offer unpaid externships for two weeks duration to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. All students must be enrolled at an AVMA accredited university and have legal work status in the USA.
As a comprehensive private specialty hospital, we offer rotations through the following specialties: Critical Care, Dermatology, Emergency Services, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Cardiology, and Avian and Exotics. Individuals are paired with an attending clinician throughout the rotation as well as the intern on the service.  The nature of involvement with cases is primarily an observational role although students are involved in case management discussion. Currently, all externship opportunities are at the Tampa location with the possibility to rotate to our Brandon and/or Clearwater locations.
The first day of your arrival begins with a tour of the facility and introduction to your senior clinician.  Please arrive at 8:30 am on your first day and 8 am each day thereafter (please note that if you are on ER services, arrangements regarding start times will vary).  Appropriate attire includes scrubs or professional dress along with your student ID or name badge. Specific service expectations will be described once your externship schedule has been organized.  General expectations of externs include attendance at didactics (rounds, journal club, and lectures). We invite you to attend continuing education opportunities hosted at our facility during your stay.
We do not have the ability to provide housing during your visit, but there are many local hotels nearby, and we also have a technician that rents out a room to visiting externs if you are interested. As there is not an application process, we just request a copy of your CV.
