During the externship, the student will have the opportunity to work alongside
Midwest Animal Hospital professionals and actively participate in every
aspect of patient care. We are not just looking for talent; we like to get to
know our externs and help them maximize their potential. Every student
learns at their own pace, but we want to make sure we are giving them the
best tools. We are open 7 days a week and accept walk-ins and
appointments, so they can expect to see a high volume of patients and
clients. This will give the student the opportunity to learn at a fast pace. Like our
employees, we expect externs to work hard interacting with our clients and
getting hands-on experience.

Banfield's externship program gives students an idea of what it is like to work in a corporate small animal practice that focuses on preventive care. The student will be able to shadow doctors but also be hands on and develop their technical skills. We will typically sit down on the first day and go over the student's goals for the externship so that we can tailor the experience as much as possible to the individual students' needs.

During the externship, participants usually spend time rotating through different departments, including emergency, internal medicine, and surgery. In the emergency department, externs may assist in triaging incoming cases, observing and learning how to stabilize critical patients, and gaining exposure to a wide range of urgent medical conditions.

In the internal medicine department, externs may shadow experienced veterinarians as they diagnose and manage complex medical cases. This could involve performing diagnostic procedures such as bloodwork, radiography, ultrasound, and endoscopy. Externs may also learn about treatment plans, patient monitoring, and client communication skills.

In the surgery department, externs may observe or assist in various surgical procedures, such as soft tissue surgeries and orthopedic surgeries. They may learn about surgical techniques, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care. Externs might also have the opportunity to participate in rounds, case discussions, and learn about pre-operative evaluations.

Throughout the externship, participants can expect to interact with veterinary technicians, support staff, and experienced veterinarians. They may have the chance to develop clinical skills, such as handling and restraining animals, performing basic procedures, and understanding medical terminology. Additionally, externs may gain insights into the administrative aspects of veterinary practice, including medical records, client communication, and hospital management.

Overall, a typical extern experience in a veterinary clinic with emergency, internal medicine, and surgery departments offers a comprehensive exposure to a wide range of medical cases, emergency situations, and surgical procedures. It helps aspiring veterinarians develop their clinical skills, expand their knowledge base, and make valuable connections within the veterinary field.
